Aircraft Engine Technician Training

Do you like the excitement that comes with flying? You may consider training to become an aircraft engine technician. Airplanes have become a part of our everyday life since 1903, when the Wright Brothers took the first powered aircraft off the ground. From small engine private jets, to huge cargo planes, aircraft are used in every part of the world. They all have something in common, and that is: their need for regular repair and maintenance.

Safety is critical as far as aircraft are concerned. If the engine of your car quits, you can pull it by the roadside. But if the engine of your plane quits when you are flying at ten thousand feet, the problem is entirely more serious. Aviation technicians are highly skilled in the safety and maintenance of airplanes.

Training Requirements

Most aircraft engine technicians receive training in one of the certified FAA schools. One may specialize in avionics or aviation maintenance management. The FAA certifies mechanics who specialize on civilian aircraft as airframe mechanics or power plant mechanics.

The standards set by FAA require that certified mechanic schools must offer at least 1,900 instructions class hours. The program lasts between 18 and 24 months, and provides hands-on training with equipment and tools. Aircraft technicians and mechanics are required to pass a certification exam and take a minimum of 16 hours training every two years to keep their certificate up to date.

Aircraft engine technician training has different two specific areas of specialization:
  • Aircraft preventive maintenance: A large number of technicians specialize in this field. It includes inspecting the landing gear, aircraft engines, brakes, valves, pumps, pressurized sections and other parts of the plane. These technicians perform necessary parts replacements and maintenance and keep records of the maintenance done on each plane.

  • Aircraft repair: The work of these technicians includes fixing problems identified by inspectors and pilots. They work quickly to put back aircraft back into services.
Aircraft engine technician training requires a student to specialize in one type of aircraft such as a propeller-driven airplane, helicopter or jet.

The role played by an aviation maintenance technician is crucial for a smooth flow of operations within the aviation industry. For a technician to work efficiently, he should have attained a high level of experience and skills, making aircraft engine training critical for those looking to enter the field.
